Album
Back in 1983, before the days of Planet Drum and Supralingua, Mickey Hart teamed with Henry Wolff and Nancy Hennings to create Yamantaka, one of the darkest and most sinister Tibetan bowl CDs ever. Hart introduced several exotic percussion instruments on this recording. Some of them are ancient and ethnic and others are his designs. The CD gets its name from the Tibetan god of the dead and lord of the underworld - hence the dark overtones. This is deep and moving music. In 1991, Hart produced the album Planet Drum, which remained at 1 on the Billboard World Music chart for 26 weeks, and received the first ever Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. Hart has written books on the history and traditions of drumming throughout history. His solo recordings featuring a variety of guest musicians are percussive but verge on New Age. His enthusiasm for world music traditions and preservation and collaborative efforts is comparable to that of guitarist Ry Cooder. Yamantaka 1983 Mickey Hart, Henry Wolff, Nancy Hennings. Henry Wolff & Nancy Hennings: American musician who teamed up with Henry Wolff to make the album Tibetan Bells in 1971, one of the pioneering LPs of new-age music. In 1982, with the assistance of Wolff and Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, she produced the mysterious sounding Yamantaka. She also contributed to the other Tibetan Bells albums Tibetan Bells II, Tibetan Bells III and The Bells of Sha'ng Shu'ng. Field of Souls, Solar Winds, Towards the Bending of the Light и другие песни. Mickey Hart is in fine form. His collaboration with Wolff and Hennings is excellent. This album is well worth a listen. It is one of my all time favourites. This is a very good album featuring Mickey Hart, Henry Wolff & Nancy Hennings. Mickey said after the album's original release that it was basically a Henry and Nancy album that he helped out on. Read more.
