Album
Album 2007 11 Songs. Michael Hurley possesses one of the most remarkable voices in contemporary music. Though his tone is cracked and ragged, Hurley, who has been recording his unique brand of beautifully distressed country-blues for more than four decades, can holler, yodel and croon with the trouble worn authority of Jimmie Rodgers. Ancestral Swamp is nothing less than a masterpiece. It stands as an authentic piece of roots music in an era plagued with overwrought imitators. Ancestral Swamp Michael Hurley. The Ancestral Swamp. Michael Hurley. Released: Sep 2007. Ancestral Swamp is the 20th full length album by legendary rambler, cartoonist, outsider folk singer, and guitarist Michael Hurley. It arrives just in the nick of time for the rabid Snockophile. A batch of new vittles and encores of some of his classic tunes, Ancestral Swamp bubbles with laid back ease and tremolodic goodness. Most songs have the simplest of arrangements: Hurley singing solo, accompanied by his guitar, Wurlizter organ, or fiddle. Tara Jane OÕNeil helps lend a nice touch to 'El Dorado', and Snock calls upon frequent past accomplices Dave Reisch and Louie Longmeyer for. Michael Hurley born December 20, 1941 is an American folk singer who was essential to the Greenwich Village folk music scene of the 1960s and 1970s. In addition to playing a wide variety of instruments, Hurley is also a cartoonist and a painter. Hurley's music has been described as outsider folk. Before starting his recording career Hurley contracted mononucleosis and needed to wait several years until he could sign to a record label. Hurley's debut album, First Songs, was recorded for Folkways. Michael Hurley Ancestral Swamp Review. Released 2007. Blessed with a voice that makes Leon Redbone, JJ Cale and Ry Cooder all sound like a bunch of prissy stage-school elocutionists, Ancestral Swamp is a welcome pit-stop on Hurleys lo-fi travelogue across the myths and backwaters of rural America. Every year of his colourful life has been etched deep into leathery vocal chords, lending tunes like Dying Crapshooters Blues , Lonesome Graveyard , Gambling Charley and a surprisingly moving rendition of Streets Of Laredo , with a bleary, weary dust-covered reportage. In the liner notes to Ancestral Swamp, Michael Hurley's 20th full-length in more than 40 years, there's a photograph of the musician holding a cartoon mask- green papier-mâché skin, red-yellow eyes, long trumpet snout, topped with a floppy beret- to obscure his face and shocks of white hair. He's not hiding, necessarily, just changing form. While never quite as committed to anonymity as, say, Jandek, Hurley certainly cultivates a playful elusiveness, with a history that traces through a decades-long solo career and projects like Have Moicy to his early days as a Greenwich Vill
